I’ve encountered this in my own life… as a female in a male dominated sport (drag racing). You are made to feel as though you must go above and beyond to prove yourself, and somewhere along the lines, you are made to feel that to “play with the boys” you have to “BE one of the boys”.

Its the whole reason I started my own website, Horsepower & Heels. Who says I can’t be feminine AND like racing cars? Why stereotype strong character as being only MANLY?

But of course we don’t ask the same from our male leaders. We still have a long way to go, baby. On the flip side, we women also do have to really, really get playing by their rules and not whine about not being invited. Let’s just go there even without the invite.

I saw an interview with an researcher who looked into the apparent rise in promiscuity among teenage girls. One of the conclusions she reached is that young girls are often in competition with their mothers who often not only look younger but also dress provocatively and increasingly take advantage of cosmetic surgery.

My wife’s mother passed away years ago but Lisa often tells me about how her mother was attractive and fashionable but in such a way that set a good example for her.

Lastly, I think we need to have a serious look at how media portrays youth. Not to control but an eye to self restraint, but the republican in me says that the best way to accomplish this is by consumers voting with their wallets.

Good point, good film.

Another thing I’d like to see: less focus on the human body as a sex object. I swear the ad industry won’t be happy until they’ve sexualized and fetishized every part from our hair to our toes.
